End of the Beginning!

Instead of this blog talking about all the technicalities of different projects that I have been a part of for the past 13 weeks, I’ve decided to take this blog to reflect on the work that I have created.

The main theme for my second and third blogs were a personal project that I was planning on finishing and exploring in the rest of these blogs.

Unfortunately, university took priority over the past few weeks and I had to put my personal projects on hold. Therefore, my blogs took a bit of a different path. I wanted to take the time now to reflect both on that project as well as my university work.

I only started using ableton 13 weeks ago. I remember exactly what I was thinking when I first opened it. I honestly thought that I would never be able to use that DAW to save my life. It’s weird to think that 13 weeks later, ableton has become like second nature to me and I have written a song with an awesome group of people that I am actually pretty proud of.

From the time where I stopped working on my own project and focused full time on my university work, my skills set dramatically improved. I found that while working on my own stuff I was already improving on ableton, and was even more surprised how my skills improved when I was working on my composition for university.

I found that when I was working on my own stuff I was able to experiment without deadlines. This allowed me to learn ableton in a whole different way. I was finally able to understand electronic music a bit more and understand how the genre works. It was a side of music that I never thought I would enjoy and appreciate.

As my skills improved over the weeks, we were put into groups and had to create a song that was inspired by Empire of the Sun (as spoken about in my last blog). This project was the biggest learning experience for me and we’ve come out with a pretty awesome song. Growing up, I often wrote my own music and lyrics, but it was nothing professional, it was mainly just a way for me to release thoughts and feelings. This project gave me the opportunity to follow through with a song that I wrote. I surprised myself with my music knowledge when writing the song and with the help of the other members in my group, we really went above and beyond.

As a group we decided to form a band called ‘In Context’ and plan on writing more music together. I am super excited at the thought of writing new music with these guys and for my musical knowledge to grow even more.

All in all, I’m super proud of what I have achieved over the past 13 weeks. There is still so much improvement on the quality of what I produce, but to think that I have half decent projects to share is a super exciting achievement for me. I’m looking forward to finally finish my personal project as well as write new music in the next few weeks. Updates on my personal project and new music will be in my next blog!

In the meantime, check out my personal project and the song me and my band wrote!
